My Go To on Visit

I always make a stop here when I’m back in Chicago to visit. The lines are long (and don’t bother calling – it’s not much better). However, it’s always worth the wait. Take a book, a friend or just scroll through your phone. Patience, in this place, is a virtue well worth the effort. Whether it’s a turkey and cheese sub (just something about the bread, and the onions and pickles – good lord yum) or the steak and cheese with mixed sweet and hot peppers or simply a Chicago polish with fries and steak sauce. This is Chicago’s south side comfort cuisine at its best. Make a stop, place your order, meditate or pray while you wait and prepare to reach divine bliss once you eat.

My quest to document the tastiest sandwich shops in the Chicago area led me back to Home of the Hoagy. Located at 1312 West 111th Street, at South Throop, east of I-57, in the Morgan Park community, with locations also in southwest suburban Oswego and Plainfield, it is “love at first taste” for the restaurant’s famous steak sandwich and the house’s famous steak sauce that shames ketchup and Lea & Perrins Original Worcestershire and A-1 and Heinz 57 and Peter Luger and Carolina BBQ and Delmonico’s Classic 1837. Since 1969, when late owner Roosevelt McCarthy opened the doors to his takeout emporium, Home of the Hoagy has been a go-to destination for steak sandwiches, Polish sausage, hot dogs, chili dogs, chili, turkey and ham and turkey. Open from 11 to 8 on Tuesday, 11 to 7 on Wednesday and Thursday and 11 to 8 on Friday and Saturday, the Beverly community bellwether frequently entertains long lines waiting to sample the exquisite comfort food. Start with the Original Hoth Hoagy with Krakow ham sausage, Cotto salami, beerwurst and American cheese topped with tomato, peppers and shaved onions with a spice blend and oil and vinegar on a Hoagy roll. But the star of the show is the Steak Hoagy with chopped Certified Black Angus steak and melted American cheese with seasoned diced grills onions and sweet pickles drenched in a sweet and tangy sauce with mild giardiniera. It is described as “a meal on a bun” and I certainly won’t disagree.

On Tuesday’s you can get a Hoagy special for about $2.90 as and it is worth it can go wrong with that price it’s half off on their regular price it’s a sandwich with cold cuts ,onions,oil and spices ,tomato and peperrocini peppers all in a great bread sub roll
